When Thing-one was first born, I felt great. I distinctly remember the husband going back to work after his two weeks paternity leave. How I dressed my baby all by myself, strapped her in the buggy all by myself, took her out walking all by myself. I felt like I was flying. When she was six months old, I had to go back to work. That is when the anxiety started.

So all my friends are pregnant, and I am not. One of them just gave birth and I am algae-green with envy. I know right? I’ve done it three times and it bloody hurts and makes a mess and you can’t sit down for weeks afterwards and you look like a zombie and have no idea what you are doing and you put the remote control in the fridge and take the butter to bed… but don’t newborn heads smell lovely?

My children love to embarrass me. I have often rushed them off to A&E overheated and sobbing, only for the painkillers to kick in en route. By the time we are seen they are running about the consultation room stealing rubber gloves and playing at being a chicken.
